When Is the Best Time to Visit the Scottsdale Greenbelt? 🌵☀️
The Scottsdale Greenbelt is great all year.
The trick is knowing what time to go.
A sunny afternoon in January? Perfect. ☀️
A sunny afternoon in July? Absolutely not. ☀️☀️☀️☀️🔥
That is life in Scottsdale.
The Greenbelt changes a lot with the seasons. Winter is green, busy and beautiful. Spring might have the best weather of the entire year. Summer belongs to sunrise and nighttime. Fall is when everyone slowly starts coming back outside.
Here is my guide to enjoying the Scottsdale Greenbelt in every season.
The Very Quick Guide

The basic rule is simple:
In Scottsdale, the season decides the time of day.

December through February

Winter is when the Scottsdale Greenbelt really shows off.
The grass is green. The lakes look great. The weather is comfortable. Seasonal residents and winter visitors are back in town, and the Greenbelt gets noticeably busier.
You will see walkers, cyclists, dogs, fishermen, families, golfers, runners, ducks, geese and plenty of people simply enjoying being outside.
And unlike summer, you can do something wonderful:
Go outside at noon.
A sunny January afternoon around Chaparral Lake can be about as pleasant as Scottsdale gets.
The tradeoff is that you will have more company. Winter is peak Scottsdale season, and the Greenbelt feels like it.
Personally, I think that is part of the fun.

No need to overthink winter. Pick a nice day and go.
🌼 Spring: Maybe the Best Weather of the Year
March through May

March is hard to beat.
Cool mornings. Warm afternoons. Great evenings. Long daylight.
This is the time of year when you can really explore the Greenbelt instead of planning your entire outing around the temperature.
Take a longer walk.
Bike farther than usual.
Visit Railroad Park with the kids.
Walk around Chaparral Lake and just keep going.
Start around the Civic Center and finish with dinner in Old Town.
Spring evenings are especially good. The parks are busy, sports are going, dogs are everywhere, and everyone seems to be taking advantage of the weather before summer arrives.
Because it will arrive.
By May, Scottsdale starts turning up the thermostat quickly.

Let's be clear.
Do not plan your leisurely Greenbelt walk for noon in July.
There is no award.
There is no secret cool breeze waiting around the corner.
It is Phoenix-area summer. It is hot.
Really hot.
But summer does not mean you have to abandon the Greenbelt. You just have to change the schedule.
🌅 Sunrise Is Fantastic
Early summer mornings can actually be beautiful.
The Greenbelt is quiet. The light is soft. Runners, cyclists and dog walkers are already out trying to beat the heat.
If you want a longer summer walk or bike ride, sunrise is the time.
Then the sun gets higher and everything changes quickly.
🌙 After Sunset Is Even More Fun
This might actually be my favorite summer Greenbelt experience.
Wait for the sun to go down.
The temperature starts dropping, sports fields and courts light up, and people begin coming back outside.
You may pass softball games, tennis players, runners, cyclists and families who have all spent the afternoon hiding from the sun.
Many of the parks along the Greenbelt have lighted sports facilities, so parts of the corridor can stay surprisingly lively after dark.
And summer nights have one more bonus.
💦 The Sprinklers
You are walking along on a hot night and suddenly...
PSSSSSSHHHHHH.
Sprinklers.
Honestly, getting hit with some cold sprinkler water on a hot Scottsdale evening can be great.
Kids love it.
Dogs definitely love it.
And after a 105-degree day, you probably will not complain much either.
Just remember that all that irrigation means sections of the path can be wet.
Wet pavement can be slippery, especially on a bike or around a turn.
Enjoy the sprinkler.
Just don't wipe out. 🚲💦

🍂 Fall: Scottsdale Comes Back to Life
September through November
🌡️ Average highs: about 78 to 100°F
🌡️ Average lows: about 45 to 68°F
☀️ Heat rating: ☀️☀️☀️🔥 → ☀️ Perfect
Fall in Scottsdale does not arrive all at once.
September still thinks it is summer.
October starts negotiating.
November finally gets the message.
September mornings and evenings can be nice, but afternoons are still very hot.
Then sometime in October, you walk outside and realize:
Hey, this isn't terrible.
That is when Scottsdale starts coming back outdoors.
The Greenbelt gets busier.
Dogs come out earlier.
Bike rides move back into normal hours.
Families stay at the parks longer.
Sports pick up.
And by November, daytime walking is comfortable again.
You can almost feel the city switching back into winter mode.

November is one of the most underrated Greenbelt months.
🌙 What Is the Greenbelt Like at Night?
Nighttime Greenbelt walks deserve more attention.
Especially during summer.
You lose some of the daytime views, but you get a completely different atmosphere.
Cooler temperatures.
Lighted ballfields.
Tennis courts glowing in the distance.
People exercising after dark.
Quiet stretches of path.
Reflections from nearby lights on the lakes.
And sometimes sprinklers shooting across the path.
The individual Scottsdale parks have posted closing hours, generally sunrise to 10:30 p.m.
The Indian Bend Wash multiuse path itself remains accessible beyond the individual park hours, which makes very early and late outings possible.
If you are biking or walking after dark, bring a light and make yourself easy to see.
⛈️ One Summer Warning: Monsoons
Summer rain is different on the Greenbelt.
Remember what Indian Bend Wash actually is:
a flood-control system.
A monsoon can put water across paths and through underpasses very quickly.
If you see moving water or a flooded underpass, turn around.
Do not try to walk or bike through it.
The path will still be there tomorrow.

For pure weather, I would rank them:

🔥 Summer
But summer being last does not mean summer is bad.
It is just different.
A July night on the Greenbelt with the sports fields lit, sprinklers running and the heat finally easing off feels nothing like a January afternoon around Chaparral Lake.
Both can be great.
That is really the secret to enjoying the Scottsdale Greenbelt year-round:
You do not need the perfect season.
You just need the right time of day. 🌵
