Best Greenbelt Stops for Kids: The Ultimate Family Guide to the Scottsdale Greenbelt

If you have kids and you're wondering where to start on the Scottsdale Greenbelt, there is one easy answer:

Start at McCormick-Stillman Railroad Park.

I've spent a lot of time exploring the Scottsdale Greenbelt, and if I had family visiting from out of town and only had one place to take them, Railroad Park would be at the top of the list.

The train rides, carousel, playgrounds, splash pad, and open space make it one of the best family destinations anywhere in Scottsdale.

The good news is that it is just the beginning.

The Scottsdale Greenbelt is filled with parks, lakes, playgrounds, splash areas, paths, and open spaces that are perfect for families. Some are destination parks where you can spend an entire afternoon. Others are great for a quick stop while walking or biking the Greenbelt.

Here are my favorite Greenbelt stops for kids.

1. McCormick-Stillman Railroad Park

๐Ÿ“ 7301 E Indian Bend Road, Scottsdale, AZ 85250

Best For

๐Ÿš‚ Train rides
๐ŸŽ  Carousel rides
๐Ÿ› Playgrounds
๐Ÿ’ฆ Splash pad
๐Ÿ‘จโ€๐Ÿ‘ฉโ€๐Ÿ‘งโ€๐Ÿ‘ฆ Full family outings

If there is a crown jewel for families along the Greenbelt, this is it.

Kids can ride the Paradise & Pacific Railroad, climb aboard historic rail cars, explore Western Town, cool off at the splash pad, and spend hours on the playgrounds.

What makes Railroad Park special is that it works for almost every age group. Toddlers love the playgrounds and train. Elementary-age kids can spend hours exploring. Even adults usually end up enjoying the train exhibits and historic rail cars.

The parking is easy, there are restrooms throughout the park, and there is enough to do that you can easily spend half a day here.

Local Tip

Arrive early on weekends.

The park gets busy because nearly every Scottsdale parent knows about it. Earlier in the morning you'll find shorter train lines, cooler temperatures, and easier parking.

How Long to Stay

2 to 4 hours

2. Chaparral Park

๐Ÿ“ 5401 N Hayden Road, Scottsdale, AZ 85250

Best For

๐Ÿ› Playground
๐Ÿšถ Family walks
๐ŸŒŠ Lake views
๐Ÿงบ Picnics
๐Ÿ• Dogs and kids together

If Railroad Park is Scottsdale's best family destination, Chaparral Park is probably the best all-around Greenbelt park.

The playground is excellent, the lake is beautiful, and there is plenty of room for kids to run without feeling crowded.

One of my favorite things about Chaparral is how easy it is to combine activities. Kids can play at the playground, walk around the lake, watch ducks and birds, ride scooters along the paved paths, and enjoy a picnic without ever getting back in the car.

Families with dogs also love this area because the Chaparral Dog Park is nearby.

Local Tip

Bring scooters or bikes.

The wide paved paths around the lake are perfect for younger riders.

How Long to Stay

1 to 3 hours

3. Eldorado Park

๐Ÿ“ 2311 N Miller Road, Scottsdale, AZ 85257

Best For

๐Ÿ›น Skateboarding
๐Ÿ€ Sports
๐Ÿ› Playgrounds
๐ŸŠ Swimming
๐Ÿ‘จโ€๐Ÿ‘ฉโ€๐Ÿ‘ง Multiple age groups

Eldorado Park is one of the easiest parks to recommend when kids of different ages are coming along.

Younger kids can enjoy the playground while older children often gravitate toward The Wedge Skatepark, sports fields, and aquatic center.

The ponds and paths add a nice scenic element, and there is enough space that the park never feels cramped.

This is one of those parks where everyone finds something different to do.

Local Tip

If you have one child who wants a playground and another who wants more action, Eldorado is often the best compromise.

How Long to Stay

1.5 to 3 hours

4. Vista del Camino Park

๐Ÿ“ 956 N 77th St, Tempe, AZ 85281

Best For

๐Ÿ’ฆ Splash pad
๐Ÿ› Playground
๐ŸŒณ Short family outings
๐Ÿ• Dog owners
โ˜€๏ธ Summer visits

Vista del Camino is one of Scottsdale's most underrated family parks.

The splash area makes a huge difference during warmer months. Kids can cool off while parents relax nearby, and the playground is close enough that moving between activities is easy.

The ponds, open grass, and walking paths make it feel larger than it actually is.

Families who live in south Scottsdale often know how great Vista is, but visitors sometimes overlook it because Railroad Park and Chaparral get most of the attention.

Local Tip

Bring towels and a change of clothes.

Kids almost always end up wetter than expected.

How Long to Stay

45 minutes to 2 hours

5. Indian School Park

๐Ÿ“ 4289 N Hayden Road, Scottsdale, AZ 85251

Best For

๐Ÿ› Playground
๐ŸŽพ Active families
๐Ÿšถ Greenbelt walks
๐Ÿงบ Quick outings

Indian School Park is a great middle-ground option.

It doesn't have the huge attractions of Railroad Park or the lake experience of Chaparral, but it is easy to access, has plenty of open space, and connects directly to the Greenbelt.

If you're already exploring the Greenbelt by bike or on foot, this is a convenient stop for a playground break.

How Long to Stay

30 to 90 minutes

6. Mountain View Park

๐Ÿ“ 8625 E Mountain View Road, Scottsdale, AZ 85258

Best For

โšฝ Open fields
๐Ÿ› Playground
๐Ÿ‘จโ€๐Ÿ‘ฉโ€๐Ÿ‘ง Younger children
๐Ÿšถ Northern Greenbelt access

Mountain View Park is often overlooked because it is farther north than the Greenbelt's most famous destinations.

That is actually part of its appeal.

The playground, fields, and community-centered atmosphere make it a great place for families who want a quieter experience.

It is easy to park, easy to navigate, and rarely feels crowded.

How Long to Stay

30 minutes to 1.5 hours

If You Only Have Time for One Stop

If you're visiting Scottsdale with kids and only have time for one Greenbelt destination:

๐Ÿฅ‡ McCormick-Stillman Railroad Park

If you have time for two:

๐Ÿฅ‡ Railroad Park
๐Ÿฅˆ Chaparral Park

If you're visiting during warmer months:

๐Ÿฅ‡ Railroad Park
๐Ÿฅˆ Vista del Camino Splash Pad

If your kids are older:

๐Ÿฅ‡ Eldorado Park
๐Ÿฅˆ Railroad Park

Final Thoughts

One of the things that makes the Scottsdale Greenbelt special is that it isn't just a trail.

It is a connected chain of family-friendly destinations stretching across Scottsdale.

You can ride a train at Railroad Park, walk around a lake at Chaparral Park, watch skateboarders at Eldorado Park, cool off at Vista del Camino, and still never leave the Greenbelt.

For families, that combination of parks, paths, playgrounds, and open space is hard to find anywhere else in Arizona.

And if you're visiting for the first time, start with Railroad Park. There is a reason generations of Scottsdale kids have grown up loving it.
